The first two years of the K-model, Harley used a splined gear shifter shaft. The bikes shifted on the right through 1974
. In 1975 and 1975, the shaft came out the right and there was a complex linkage to put the lever on the left, to comply with Federal law. 1977 saw the case redesign for left-side shift.
