Frame

The Sportster frame is made of steel tubes that connect to steel castings or forgings, or weldments after 1982. The Iron Sportster has 4 distinct frames.
  1. The early frame, 1952 to 1976, with both a kick- and electric-start version, K-model versions (1952-1956) have no flat above where the rear cylinder head sits.
  2. The sump motor frame, 1977 and 1978, no footpeg mounts, they go on engine.
  3. The triangulated frame 1979 to 1981.
  4. The modern frame, 1982 to 1984.
